The photographs in this collection were offered to the Special Collections unit of the Lakeland Public Library by the local newspaper, The Ledger, in 1989. The photographs were taken by photographers under contract to or in the employ of The Ledger. The copyright status of the photos varies with the employment status of the photographer who took them. The photographs were taken to accompany articles in the newspaper and many, though probably not all, actually appeared in the newspaper. They cover all of Polk County, Florida.
The subjects of the photographs range from the mundane to the unusual and include auto accidents, local businesses, children in school and at play, dogs and dog shows, fashion shows, fishing, the Florida Citrus Festival in Winter Haven, Florida Southern College in Lakeland, clubs and organizations, community fundraising activities, elections, and Lakeland General Hospital.
