Herbert Drane was one of the pioneer settlers of Lakeland, Florida, arriving in what was to become Lakeland with a railroad construction crew in 1884. He became one of the city's leading citizens and one of its most prominent businessmen. He also held a number of offices at the local, state, and national levels, including serving sixteen years in the US House o Representatives.
In addtion to his insurance business in Lakeland, Drane also purchased stock in, and served on the boards of, a number of local business enterprises. Over the years he collected stock certificates for a number of the local companies in which he invested. Most of the certificates are from the first two decades of the twentieth century and reflect the unbridled optimism of a booming economy and the unwavering belief that every business would succeed. Many of the certificates are colorful and distinctive and can stand alone as works of art.
