This collection consists of issues of a Lakeland High School publication entitled Tam O'Shanter. It was a literary magazine that was first published by students in the English Department of Lakeland High School in Lakeland Florida. The first issue was published in the fall of 1949 with Alice Coe, Class of 1951, as the editor. It continued to be published semiannually until 1980 when it became an annual publication. Initially, it contained submissions of shor stories, poetry, and essays by students from the schoo's English classes, but later broadened it submission policy to include work from all students and to accept works of art, as well as literary submissions. The last time that Tam O'Shanter was listed as a student activity in the Lakeland High School yearbook was 1999.
The collection in the Lakeland Public Library consists of scattered issues of Tam O'Shanter from 1953 to 1996. Due to concerns about copyright, the Lakeland Public Library has scanned and made available only thiose issues of Tam O'Shanter published prior to 1978. Pages in each issue devoted solely to advertising were also not scanned.
